What is a .AEA file?

An .AEA file is a type of document used by a program called Ae Timer. This program acts like an alarm clock on your computer, helping you remember important times by setting alarms. When you create an alarm in Ae Timer, it saves all the details in a file with the extension .AEA. This includes when the alarm is supposed to go off, any message you've added to remind yourself why the alarm is set, and even a specific song or video to play when the alarm sounds. You can change these settings anytime by opening the .AEA file in Ae Timer and editing them.

To open an .AEA file, you need the Ae Timer program from Ae Applications. This is the software specifically designed to work with these alarm document files.

However, it's important to note that .AEA files are quite rare. They became less common after MiniDiscs (MDs) were introduced in 1992 and then further overshadowed by CDs. The only time you might come across an .AEA file these days is if you're converting audio from an old MiniDisc or if a friend shares with you some music they've converted from their MiniDisc collection. The audio in these files uses a special format called ATRAC1, a version of ATRAC which stands for Adaptive TRansform Acoustic Coding. This technology was not only used in MiniDiscs but also in the Sony Dynamic Digital Sound system, which was a feature of some movie theaters in the 1990s.
