.AVATAR File Extension

A .AVATAR file is a Google Talk Avatar File, created by Google.

Open with Google Talk. Available for Windows.

What is a .AVATAR file?

The file extension .AVATAR is associated with Google Talk, which was an online chatting application. This type of file, known as a Google Talk Avatar File, is essentially a profile picture file. It is used to store a bitmap image, which can be in either .JPG or .PNG format. These avatar files are important for visually representing users within the Google Talk service. They appear next to each user's name in the friends list and are also displayed during chat sessions to help identify who is speaking.

To open an .AVATAR file, you would typically use Google Talk. However, since Google Talk was discontinued in 2015, these files might need to be handled differently. In operating systems like Windows Vista and Windows 7, .AVATAR files are usually saved in the directory path [user]\AppData\Local\Google\Google Talk\avatars\. If you need to view these images, one common method is to rename the .AVATAR file by changing its extension to ".jpg" or ".png". After renaming, the file can be opened with any standard image viewer that supports these formats.

This approach allows you to view the profile pictures originally used in Google Talk, even though the application itself is no longer active.
