What is a .AVCHD file?

The .AVCHD file extension stands for a High Definition Video File, which is a format used for the digital recording and playback of high-definition video. The name "AVCHD" is an acronym for Advanced Video Coding High Definition. This format was developed in 2006 by Sony and Panasonic, mainly for use in consumer camcorders that record high-definition video.

AVCHD is comparable to the .HDV format and is considered suitable for professional video recording as well. However, it's important to note that not all Blu-ray Disc players support the playback of AVCHD files. This is because, despite having many similarities with the Blu-ray Disc format, AVCHD is not included in the Blu-ray Disc specification.

When it comes to opening .AVCHD files, one of the most commonly recommended programs is the VideoLAN VLC media player. VLC is a versatile player that supports a wide range of video formats, including AVCHD.

It's also worth mentioning that there was a known issue with the original HD Writer software from Panasonic, which was used for importing and editing AVCHD files. The versions of HD Writer released from 2006 to 2008 had difficulties recognizing newer AVCHD formats like 1080i, 1080p50, or 1080p60. However, newer versions of HD Writer, starting from HD Writer AE and including version 2 and higher, are capable of handling these newer formats.
