.BLEND2 File Extension

A .BLEND2 file is a Blender Document Backup 2 File, created by Blender.

Open with Blender. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .BLEND2 file?

The .BLEND2 file is a special kind of file that is made by a program called Blender. Blender is a free program that lets people create 3D models, animations, and more. When you work on a project in Blender and save your work, Blender automatically makes backup copies of your file. These backup files are there to help you if something goes wrong and you need to go back to an earlier version of your work.

A .BLEND2 file is one of these backup files. Specifically, it's the backup that Blender made not the last time you saved, but the time before that. So, if you save your work in Blender, it makes a .BLEND1 file. Then, if you save again, the .BLEND1 file updates to reflect the most recent save, and a new .BLEND2 file is created to save the version from two saves ago. This way, Blender keeps a history of your work as you make changes.

If you see files like .blend1, .blend2, .blend3, and so on, next to your main .blend file, it means Blender is keeping multiple backup versions of your work. The number tells you how many saves ago that backup was made.

To open a .BLEND2 file, you use Blender, the same program that created it. However, because it's a backup file, you can't open it directly as you would with a regular .blend file. First, you need to change the file's name. You do this by renaming the .BLEND2 file to end with ".blend" instead of ".blend2". Once you've done that, you can open it in Blender just like any other Blender project file.

Remember, Blender lets you decide how many backup copies you want to keep. You can set this in Blender's settings, under user preferences. So, if you're working on something really important and you want to make sure you have lots of backups, you can adjust the settings to keep more copies.
