What is a .DART file?

A .DART file is a type of file that stores code written in the Dart programming language. Dart is a special kind of computer language used to create programs and applications for the internet, servers, mobile phones, and even devices that are part of the Internet of Things (IoT), which includes smart devices like thermostats and fridges. Dart is known for being easy to understand for people who already know C-style languages (like C++ or Java) because it looks similar. It also has some cool features like being able to use mixins (a way to add features to a class from another class), abstract classes (a type of class that can't be used on its own but can be the basis for other classes), optional typing (you don't always have to say what type something is), and interfaces (a way to make sure a class includes certain functions).

To open and work with .DART files, you can use the Dart software itself. There are also apps for Android devices, like File Viewer for Android, that let you view these files. More interestingly, Dart code doesn't just have to stay as Dart code. It can be turned into JavaScript, which is a language that almost all web browsers understand, using a special tool called dart2js. This means you can write something in Dart and then make it work on websites that people visit with browsers like Firefox or Chrome. There's also a special browser called Dartium, which is a bit like Chrome but can run Dart code directly without needing to convert it to JavaScript. This is part of the Dart SDK, a set of tools for people who write Dart code.

Dart was created by Google and is now available for anyone to use for free because it's open-source, meaning its code is open for anyone to look at, use, or change. Google had big plans for Dart, hoping it might become the main language for web development instead of JavaScript. However, in 2015, Google decided not to include the Dart virtual machine in its Chrome browser, which means Dart code needs to be converted to JavaScript to run in most browsers. Despite this, Dart is still a powerful tool for developers, especially for those looking to build complex applications across the web, servers, and mobile devices.
