What is a .FILE file?

The .FILE extension is a kind of placeholder used by Microsoft Windows and some other programs for files they can't recognize. Imagine you download something from the internet using your web browser, but your browser doesn't know what kind of file it is. In that case, it might just call it a .FILE. This doesn't mean it's a special type of file, just that the computer doesn't know what it is yet.

To figure out what's inside a .FILE, you can use a special tool called a file identification utility. This tool looks at the file and tries to guess what kind of file it really is. Once you know what the file is supposed to be, you can change the .FILE part to the right ending. For example, if it's really a Word document, you can change it to .DOCX, and then you can open it with Microsoft Word.

But be careful! If you find a .FILE on your computer and you don't know where it came from, don't just try to open it. It might be something harmful. Use a file identification utility first to make sure it's safe. This is important because sometimes bad people might try to trick your computer by using files like these.

Even though you see .FILE files mostly on Windows computers, they can show up on other types of computers too. If you know the file is really something else, like a picture or a document, just change the .FILE part to the right ending, like .JPG for a picture or .PDF for a document, and then you can open it with the program that's meant for that kind of file.
