What is a .FXF file?

An FXF file is a type of data file used by a software suite called BigFix, which is designed to help manage the security of computer systems and keep software up to date. The ".FXF" stands for BigFix Action File. These files are created within the BigFix software and are used to carry out specific tasks or actions. When an action needs to be performed, such as updating software or fixing security issues, the BigFix Console (which is a part of the BigFix software) creates an FXF file and sends it to the BigFix Server.

To open an FXF file, you need to use the HCL BigFix software. This is because HCL Technologies owns BigFix, having acquired it from IBM in 2019. The software understands and processes the instructions contained in the FXF file.

FXF files are generally small in size, usually ranging from 5K to 20K. However, if an FXF file is larger than 20K, it might cause an error that says "Unable to send to socket during POST operation." If this happens, the file size needs to be reduced to prevent the error.

Examples of FXF files include names like "Analysis 147.fxf," "Fixlet 146.fxf," and "Action 148.fxf." These names typically represent different types of actions that BigFix can perform, with each file containing specific instructions related to that action.
