What is a .L01 file?

An .L01 file is a type of file known as an EnCase Logical Evidence File. It is created using a program called OpenText EnCase Forensic. This program is a tool used by professionals in the field of digital forensics, which involves examining digital devices like computers, smartphones, and tablets to find important information. For example, a forensic analyst might use this program to look for evidence on a computer that is related to a legal case.

The .L01 file contains specific pieces of data that have been selected from a larger set of data, which is usually stored in a file called an .E01 file. An .E01 file is like a big container that holds all the data from a digital device. Because it can be time-consuming to go through all the data in an .E01 file, forensic analysts often pick out the most important pieces of information and save them in an .L01 file. This makes it easier and faster for them to access and review the data they are most interested in.

When creating an .L01 file, analysts have a couple of options. They can choose to save complete files, which include all the data from those files, or they can choose to save just the names of the files without including the actual data. If they save only the names, they will need to go back to the original .E01 file to view the data in those files. Analysts can also add a special security feature called hashing to the .L01 files. Hashing helps to make sure that no one has changed the data in the files since they were saved.

To open and work with an .L01 file, you need to use the OpenText EnCase Forensic program. This program is specifically designed for the kind of detailed and careful work that is required in digital forensics.

It's important to note that the .L01 format has been updated to a new format called .LX01. This change happened after OpenText, a big technology company, bought Guidance Software, the company that originally made EnCase Forensic, in 2017.
