What is a .MAD file?

The .MAD file extension is used for a type of video file that is commonly found in video games made by a company called Electronic Arts. Some of the games that use these files include titles from the Need for Speed series and some of the Sims games. These .MAD files contain both audio and video data, which means they have the sounds and the pictures needed to show things like the game's title screen, the logos of companies involved in the game, movies that play before the game starts, and scenes that happen during the game.

To open or play these .MAD files, you can use a program called File Viewer Plus, which you can download from the Microsoft store. However, some specific games that use .MAD files, like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Underground, and The Sims 2, can also open these files because they are designed to work with them. Another program that can open .MAD files is Media Player Classic, but it's important to know that while Media Player Classic can play the sound from these files, it can't show the video part.

The .MAD file format is a bit complex because it is made up of different parts called chunks. These chunks, known as MADk, MADm, and MADe, represent different types of video frames that are used to combine video and audio in a way that can be played back during the game. This structure is what allows the .MAD files to store and play back the complex scenes and sequences you see in the games.
