.MOB File Extension

A .MOB file is a MOBTV Video File, created by MediaCorp.

Open with Microsoft Windows Media Player (Included with OS). Available for Windows.

What is a .MOB file?

The .MOB file extension refers to a MOBTV Video File. This type of video file is associated with MOBTV, which stands for MediaCorp Online Broadband Television. MOBTV was a subscription-based video service that was available in Singapore. Users could download video files from this service, which were saved with the .MOB extension.

To open a .MOB file, you could use Microsoft Windows Media Player, which is a program included with the Microsoft Windows operating system. However, it's important to note that these .MOB files might include DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection. This means that to play these videos, you would need to have an active account with MOBTV, as the DRM protection ties the ability to view the video to having proper authorization from the service.

In 2010, MOBTV merged into a new service called xinmsn. This was a collaboration between MediaCorp, the company behind MOBTV, and Microsoft. After this merger, the new service started using the Silverlight format for videos, which is a different technology for running internet applications, including streaming media. As a result of this change, the .MOB file format is no longer supported by xinmsn. This means that new videos from the xinmsn service are not saved in the .MOB format, and any existing .MOB files might not be compatible with current standard media players without the appropriate DRM authorization.
