.NAP File Extension

A .NAP file is a Napster Secured Music File, created by McAfee.

Open with Trellix ePolicy Orchestrator. Available for Windows.

What is a .NAP file?

The .NAP file extension is associated with a type of file known as a Napster Secured Music File. However, this description is a bit misleading because, in reality, .NAP files are used by a program called McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator, or ePO for short. ePO is a tool that businesses use to keep their computer networks safe from viruses and other threats. A .NAP file contains an extension for the ePO software. This means it can add new features to the ePO program, like better ways to scan for viruses or new methods for reporting on the network's security. Sometimes, these files are also used to turn on software features that a business has paid for.

To open a .NAP file, you would typically use the Trellix ePolicy Orchestrator software. Trellix is the current name for what used to be known as McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator, following a rebranding.

It's interesting to note that .NAP files are somewhat similar to .M4P files, which are music files you might download from the iTunes music store. Both types of files have restrictions on how they can be used, but they use different methods to encode or secure the content. While .M4P files are specifically for music, .NAP files are not for music despite the initial association with Napster; they are for enhancing and authorizing features in security software.
