What is a .NBIB file?
An NBIB file is a special kind of document that stores information about scientific articles and books in a way that computers and certain programs can understand. This information is all about medical research and includes things like the name of the article or book, who wrote it, when it was published, important words that tell you what it's about, who published it, the volume and issue number of the journal it appeared in, and the page numbers. This format is used by PubMed, which is a big online library made by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It has a lot of medical research articles and books.
You can open an NBIB file with simple programs that let you read text, like Notepad or TextEdit, but there are also special programs like Clarivate EndNote, Clarivate EndNote Web, and ProQuest RefWorks that can read these files and help you organize your research better.
The reason we have NBIB files is because the people at PubMed wanted to make a better way to save and share information about medical articles than the older RIS format. The RIS format was used before, but the NBIB format works better for the kind of information PubMed shares.
If you find an article on PubMed that you want to save the information for, you can do this easily. When you're looking at the article on the website, there's a button that says "Cite." If you click on it, you'll see options for what information you want to save. After you choose what you want, you click "Create File," and then you decide where on your computer you want to save it. Your computer will then download the file, which you can open with any text editor or one of the special programs mentioned earlier.
The NBIB format is made up of different parts, each labeled with a special tag that tells you what kind of information it is, like the title of the book, the author's name, copyright information, the publication date, and so on. It's designed to include details that are specific to PubMed, which wasn't possible with the older RIS format. This makes it a better choice for saving and sharing medical research information.
