What is a .NDIF file?

An NDIF file is a type of file that was created for use on Mac computers. It stands for Nokia Data File but is more commonly known as a file saved in Apple's New Disk Image Format. This format was introduced with a program called Disk Copy 6.0, which is an older application designed for Mac Classic operating systems. The NDIF file is special because it uses a method called dual-fork to compress and store its data. This means the file is split into two parts: one part holds the metadata (which is like a summary or description of the data) in what's called the resource fork, and the other part holds the actual data in the data fork. This method was used in older Mac computers to help mount, or access, file systems directly from the desktop.

However, because NDIF files are split into these two parts, they can be tricky to use if you're trying to open them on computers that don't run Mac OS, making them less ideal for sharing files between different types of computers.

Over time, Apple replaced the NDIF format with a newer format called UDIF (Universal Disk Image Format), which is simpler because it stores everything in one single fork instead of splitting the data. This makes UDIF files easier to use across different platforms.

Even though NDIF files are not very common these days, you can still open them if you have a Mac computer. They can be opened using a program called Disk Utility, which comes included with the Mac OS X operating system. Disk Utility is a tool that lets you manage disk images and other storage devices on your Mac, including mounting disk images like NDIF files so you can access their contents.
