.NMC File Extension

A .NMC file is a ArcGIS Explorer Map Content File, created by ESRI.

Open with ESRI ArcGIS Explorer. Available for Windows.

What is a .NMC file?

The .NMC file extension stands for an ArcGIS Explorer Map Content File. This type of file is used with ArcGIS Explorer, which is a free program made by a company called ESRI that lets you work with maps and geographic information. An .NMC file is like a package that can hold different parts of a map. These parts can include notes you've made on the map, folders to organize information, different views or perspectives of the map, links to more information, images you've placed over the map, and various layers that show different kinds of information like the geography of an area, features like rivers and roads, or even satellite images.

You can use these .NMC files to add more information to a map you already have open in ArcGIS Explorer. This is really handy if you want to share specific map content with someone else. For example, if you've been working on a map and you want to show someone else the notes you've made or a particular view you've found interesting, you can package that information into an .NMC file and send it to them. They can then add this content to their own map in ArcGIS Explorer.

To share an .NMC file, you can use the "E-Mail" option found under the Tools tab in ArcGIS Explorer. This lets you send the file directly to someone else. If you want to save the .NMC file for later use or to share it in another way, you can use the "Export" option, also found under the Tools tab.

It's important to note that .NMC files are different from .NMF files, which are also used in ArcGIS Explorer. While an .NMF file contains a complete map that will replace any map currently open in the program, an .NMC file is just adding content to the map you already have open. This makes .NMC files very useful for adding new information and sharing specific parts of a map without replacing the whole thing.

To open an .NMC file, you'll need to have ESRI ArcGIS Explorer installed on your computer. Once you have that program, you can open the .NMC file to add its content to your current map project.
