.NXC File Extension

A .NXC file is a Not eXactly C Source Code File, created by John Hansen.

Open with NBC. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .NXC file?

A .NXC file is a type of computer file that contains code (instructions) written in a special programming language called Not eXactly C, or NXC for short. This language is a lot like the C programming language but is specifically designed for programming LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots. These robots can be programmed to do various tasks, and the .NXC file tells the robot what to do.

You can open and work with .NXC files using a program called Bricx Command Center (often abbreviated as BricxCC). This program is special because it understands the NXC language and can show the code in a way that's easy to read and understand, highlighting different parts of the code in different colors (this is called syntax highlighting). This makes it easier for people to write and debug their robot programs.

If you don't have Bricx Command Center, you can also open .NXC files with any basic text editor, like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac. However, these basic editors won't understand the NXC language, so they won't be able to highlight the syntax for you. They just show you the text of the code, but you can still read and edit it.

Additionally, the NXC language works on top of something called the Next Byte Codes (NBC) compiler. This means that when you write your program in NXC and run it, the NBC compiler translates your NXC code into a form that the LEGO Mindstorms NXT brick can understand and execute.

In summary, if you have a .NXC file, you can open it with Bricx Command Center to get a helpful, color-coded view of your code, or with any basic text editor if you just want to see or edit the text. This file is how you tell your LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot what to do, using the special NXC programming language.
