Open with Radiance. Available for Linux and Mac.

What is a .OCT file?

The .OCT file extension is used for a type of file known as a Radiance Octree File. This file is important for people who work with 3D scenes, especially in areas like architecture, design, or any field that requires realistic lighting simulations. Radiance, the program that creates .OCT files, is a special tool used for creating highly realistic images by tracing the path of light through a scene (a process known as ray tracing).

An .OCT file contains a compiled 3D scene. This means it includes all the necessary details to visualize a space or object in three dimensions, such as the shapes of objects, the materials they're made from, and how light interacts with them. Before a file becomes an .OCT file, it starts as a .RAD file, which is a text file describing the geometry, materials, and lighting of the scene in a format that humans can read and write. To turn a .RAD file into an .OCT file, a command called oconv (which stands for "octree converter") is used. This command is part of the Radiance software package.

To open an .OCT file, you need to use the Radiance software. Radiance is designed for people who need to simulate and analyze the lighting in 3D spaces, making it a powerful tool for designers, architects, and researchers. Since .OCT files are specific to the Radiance program, they cannot be easily opened or edited with other software.
