What is a .OGMU file?

An OGMU file is a special type of file used by a program called Origin, which is a tool for scientists and engineers to analyze data and create graphs. This file type was introduced in the 2018 version of Origin and is used to store something called a matrix book. A matrix book can have many pages, called matrix sheets, filled with numbers, symbols, or empty spaces arranged in columns and rows. These sheets can also include extra details like the names of each sheet, mathematical functions, the size and shape of the matrix, how it looks (style and formatting), and what kind of data it holds.

To open an OGMU file, you need to use Origin or a free program called Origin Viewer. Origin is a program that only works on Windows computers and is used to make, open, and change OGMU files. When you open an OGMU file in Origin, it shows up in a window as part of a project file, which can be either an .OPJ or .OPJU file. Origin Viewer, on the other hand, lets you look at OGMU files without the need to buy Origin, and it works on both Windows and Mac computers.

If you have an OGMU file and want to open it in Origin, you go to the File menu, choose Open..., then look for the "Origin Window .ogmu" file type. Find where your OGMU file is saved, select it, and click Open. Origin also lets you save the settings of your matrix as a template with the extension .OTMU, so you can use the same settings again without having to redo everything.

Before OGMU files, Origin used a different format called .OGM for saving these kinds of workbooks, but OGMU files are better because they use Unicode. This means they can handle a wider range of characters and offer better performance than the older OGM files.
