What is a .OLD file?

An OLD file is like a safety copy of another file you might have on your computer, such as a picture (.JPG) or a text document (.DOC). Think of it as keeping a spare key to your house; it's there in case you need it. Sometimes, a computer program will make this backup copy on its own, or a person might decide to make one just to be safe. This means they save the original file but add ".old" at the end of its name to show that it's a backup. For example, if you have a file named "holidayphoto.jpg", the backup might be named "holidayphoto.jpg.old".

To open an OLD file, you usually just need the program that was used to create or open the original file. So, if your OLD file is a backup of a Word document, you would use Microsoft Word to open it. If it's a backup of a photo, you might use a photo viewer or editor like Windows Photo Viewer or Adobe Photoshop.

However, there's a little trick to remember: sometimes, to use the backup file, you might have to remove the ".old" part from the file name. This tells your computer that you want to treat the file like the original type (like a .JPG or .DOC) and not as a special OLD file. After you do this, you can open it with the program that usually opens that type of file.
