What is a .OXPS file?
An OXPS file is a type of document that is made in a special format called Open XML Paper Specification, or OpenXPS for short. Think of it like a book or a magazine page that gets saved on your computer. It keeps everything looking exactly the same way it was originally laid out, with all the pictures and text in the right places, just like a PDF file does. People often use OXPS files for saving important things like essays for school, letters to friends, pretty postcards, newsletters for clubs, or documents for work.
To open an OXPS file, you can use different programs. Some of these programs include Pagemark XpsViewer, Microsoft XPS Viewer (which usually comes with your computer if you're using Windows), NiXPS View, and even on Android devices with an app called File Viewer for Android. These programs let you see the OXPS file just like it was meant to be seen, with all its layout and design.
The idea behind OXPS files started with Microsoft creating something called XPS, which was meant to be a new way to save and view documents, kind of like moving on from older formats they had. But then, to make it something that everyone could use more easily and not just something Microsoft controlled, an organization that sets standards for technology stuff, called Ecma International, decided to make OpenXPS an official standard in June 2009. This means it's a format that lots of different people and companies can use without having to worry about special permissions.
It's important to know that even though OXPS and the original XPS formats are a lot alike, they're not the same thing. You can't just change the name of the file from .oxps to .xps and expect it to work. They need to be converted properly if you need them in the other format.
