.PAC File Extension

A .PAC file is a STAD Graphic File, created by Netscape.

Open with Mozilla Firefox. Available for Linux, Windows, and Mac.

What is a .PAC file?

A .PAC file is a special kind of computer file that helps web browsers decide which proxy server to use when connecting to the internet. Think of a proxy server as a middleman between your computer and the internet. The .PAC file contains instructions written in a simple programming language called JavaScript. These instructions help the browser choose the best proxy server based on the website you want to visit. This is particularly useful for businesses that want to manage their internet traffic efficiently, making sure that the network doesn't get too crowded and that certain websites are accessed in specific ways.

To use a .PAC file, web browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and the now-discontinued Microsoft Internet Explorer can be set up to read these files. Although Internet Explorer is no longer updated, the other browsers can still use .PAC files. You can tell your browser to use a .PAC file by typing in the web address (URL) of the .PAC file in the browser's proxy settings. Another way browsers can find a .PAC file is through something called the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) protocol, which automatically finds and uses the .PAC file without you having to do anything.

When a browser uses a .PAC file, it runs the instructions inside the file to get a list of proxy servers it can use. These files are usually kept on a website and are often named "proxy.pac." Because the instructions in a .PAC file are just text, you can open and change them using simple text editing programs like Microsoft Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac.

It's interesting to note that the .PAC file format has been around since 1996, first used by an old web browser called Netscape Navigator 2.0. This shows how long the idea of managing internet connections through proxy servers has been important for people using the internet, especially in workplaces.
