What is a .PAT0 file?

A .PAT0 file is a special kind of file used by some games on the Nintendo Wii, like Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart. Think of it as a recipe that tells the game how to decorate 3D models with moving pictures or patterns to make them look more lively. These patterns can make things in the game, like characters or backgrounds, change appearance or seem to animate over time.

These .PAT0 files are usually packed inside another type of file called a .BRRES file, which is like a big box that holds various game resources together, including these pattern files as well as models (.MDL0) and palettes (.PLT0).

To understand how .PAT0 files work, imagine you have a model of a character in the game, and you want its outfit to sparkle or change colors. The .PAT0 file will have instructions on which textures (images) from .TEX0 files should be shown on the model and how fast they should change to create an animation effect, like sparkling or flashing.

If you're interested in seeing or changing these patterns, there's a program called BrawlBox that can open these .PAT0 files. BrawlBox can also open the .BRRES files where the .PAT0 files are stored. This is useful for game developers, modders, or fans who want to create custom animations or understand how the game's visuals work.
