What is a .RMGC file?

An RMGC file is a special type of file that is used to keep track of family history. It is made by programs called RootsMagic or RootsMagic Essentials. These programs help people find out about their ancestors and share this information with others. The RMGC file is like a digital box where you can store all sorts of details about your family members, such as their names, how old they are, when they were born, when they died, and how they are related to each other. It can also hold other kinds of information about your family.

To open and work with an RMGC file, you can use either RootsMagic or RootsMagic Essentials. RootsMagic Essentials is a free version that lets you do basic things like creating and printing a simple family tree. If you want more features, like being able to look for family members you didn't know about, seeing your family tree in a timeline, or putting your family tree on the internet, you can use the full version of RootsMagic, which you have to pay for.

Even though the information in an RMGC file is stored in a way that computers use to organize data (called SQLite), you don't need to know about that to use it. If you really want to, you can use other computer tools made for working with SQLite data to look at or change the information in an RMGC file. But, it's usually much easier to just use RootsMagic or RootsMagic Essentials because they are made specifically for working with these kinds of files.
