What is a .SAMP file?

A .SAMP file is a type of sound file that is used in video games made for the Nintendo GameCube and Wii consoles. Some games that use these files include "Skies of Arcadia Legends" and "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door." These files contain sound data like music, sound effects, or voices of characters that have been compressed to take up less space. This compression is done using a special method developed by Nintendo known as the ADPCM codec. The sounds in a SAMP file, especially music, often loop continuously in the background while you are playing the game. This means the music can keep playing over and over without stopping, which helps to create a more immersive gaming experience. To find these SAMP files, you would typically look inside the game's .ISO file, which is like a digital copy of the game disc. Within this ISO file, SAMP files are often stored in a specific folder named /sound/proj/.

If you want to listen to or work with these SAMP files outside of the game, you might run into some difficulties because not many programs can open them directly due to their unique format. However, there is a free program called Audacity, which is mainly used for editing audio files, that can import SAMP files. To do this, you have to select the option to import the SAMP file as raw data. Keep in mind, though, that when you do this, there might be some unwanted noise in the sound because Audacity might not perfectly understand the Nintendo ADPCM compression.
