What is a .SITE file?

A .SITE file is a type of file known as a GoLive Website Project File. It was specifically used with the Adobe GoLive program, which was a tool for creating and managing websites. This file contains important information about a website project, including a list of all the webpages that make up the site, images used, links between pages, any errors found, and general settings for the site. However, it's important to note that the .SITE file itself does not hold the actual webpages, images, or other content. Instead, it includes references to these components, which are stored separately.

The .SITE files are typically saved at the root level of a website project's folder. Adobe GoLive also had a feature to automatically create backup copies of these files. These backups, named something like "ProjectName Backup.site," were also stored in the root directory of the project. These backups were useful in case the original .SITE file was lost or damaged.

Unfortunately, Adobe GoLive has been discontinued since 2008, and it was replaced by Adobe Dreamweaver, another more modern web development tool. Because of this, opening .SITE files can be challenging since the original program, Adobe GoLive, is no longer available. If you need to access the contents of a .SITE file, you might have to look for older versions of Adobe GoLive or seek out other software solutions that might be compatible with these files, although such solutions may be limited.
