What is a .TA8 file?
A .TA8 file is a special kind of computer file used for keeping track of taxes for the year 2018. It is made using a program called TaxAct 2018, which is a tool people use on their Windows computers to help them with their taxes. This file has all the important tax details for that year, like the tax forms you need for your state and the ones for the whole country (IRS forms). It also keeps personal information such as your name, when you were born, if you're married, what you do for work, if you have kids or other dependents, and your social security number.
You can open this type of file with TaxAct, which is available to use on the internet through TaxAct Online. This means you can either use TaxAct on your computer or online to work with your .TA8 file.
People usually make a .TA8 file in the year after the tax year it's for, between January and April 15. So, for taxes for the year 2018, you'd make this file in early 2019. If you're using TaxAct on your computer, it saves these files in a special folder called "TaxAct2018" in the "My Documents" area. After you finish filling out your tax return in TaxAct, you can choose to print it and mail it, or you can send it in electronically. It's a good idea to make a backup of your tax return, just in case something goes wrong with the original file. To make a backup, you go to the File menu, choose Backup, and then name your backup file. This backup will be a .BA8 file. Remember, you need to save your original tax return before you make a backup.
It's also worth noting that the .TA8 file is the newer version of the tax return file for TaxAct. Before this, for the 2017 tax year, the file was called .TA7.
