What is a .TY+ file?
A .TY+ file is a type of video file that comes from a TiVo DVR, which is a device you might use to record TV shows or movies at home. These devices include older models like the TiVo Series 1, 2, and 2.5. The .TY+ file keeps the video and sound of your recorded TV show or movie in a special format called MPEG-2. This means the video and audio are broken down into smaller parts or "chunks" that are stored together in this file. Along with the video and audio, the file also has extra information, or metadata, like the name of the show or movie, a short description, and when it was recorded. Sometimes, if the show or movie is protected by copyright, this protection is also included in the .TY+ file.
To open a .TY+ file, you can use a program called FFmpeg. FFmpeg is a free software that can handle lots of different video formats, including .TY+ files.
You might come across a .TY+ file if you have an older TiVo DVR and you want to save your recorded shows or movies on your computer. When you move these recordings to your computer using a special program that comes with your TiVo, called MFS_FTP, it combines all the small parts of the video into one big .TY+ file. If your recording doesn't have any extra information like the show's name or description, the MFS_FTP program will save it as a .TY file instead, which is similar but doesn't have the metadata at the end. The "+" in the .TY+ file name shows that it has this extra information.
It's also worth noting that TiVo recordings can be saved in another format called .TIVO, which is different from .TY+ files.
