What is a .VIR file?

A .VIR file is a file that has gotten a virus. This means a harmful computer program has attached itself to the file. Antivirus software, like Norton AntiVirus by Symantec or Avira AntiVir, finds these infected files and changes their names by adding ".vir" at the end. For example, if there was a file named "picture.jpg," and it got a virus, the antivirus might change its name to "picture.jpg.vir." This is done to show that the file is dangerous and to stop it from being opened by accident, which could harm the computer.

Some programs that can deal with .VIR files include Avira Antivirus Pro, AdwCleaner, and Symantec Norton AntiVirus. However, it's very important to know that you shouldn't try to open these .VIR files yourself. If you remove the ".vir" part from the file's name and try to open it, you might accidentally start the virus. This could lead to the virus spreading or damaging your computer.

So, even though you might be able to make the file seem normal again by deleting the ".vir" extension, doing so is risky. The best thing to do with .VIR files is to let your antivirus software handle them. The antivirus will find these files, keep them away from the rest of your computer (this is called "quarantining"), and then safely remove them. This way, your computer stays safe from the harm viruses can cause.
