What is a .VMCX file?
A .VMCX file is a type of computer file called a Virtual Machine Shell Information File. It's like a shortcut or a quick link used by a program called Windows Virtual PC. This program lets you run different versions of Windows on your computer at the same time, kind of like having multiple computers in one. The .VMCX file is written in a code format known as XML and it tells the Windows Virtual PC program how to start a virtual computer. It includes details like the name of the virtual machine, which .VMC file it should use to get started, and where to find the virtual hard disk files, which end in .VHD.
You can open .VMCX files with a program called Microsoft Windows Virtual PC. However, it's important to know that this program isn't available anymore for new installations, and it only worked on Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions.
.VMCX files are similar to another type of file called .VMC, but they are used a bit differently. While both types of files help Windows Virtual PC know how to start up a virtual machine, .VMCX files are specifically used by Windows Explorer (the file manager in Windows) to show information about the virtual machine. Also, these files are stored in a different place on your computer. Windows Virtual PC puts .VMCX files in a folder named "Virtual Machines" in your user directory, but it stores .VMC files in the "AppData" directory inside your user folder.
