What is a .VMSN file?
A .VMSN file is a special kind of computer file used by VMware software, which helps computers run more than one operating system at the same time. Think of it like taking a picture of the state of a virtual computer (a computer within a computer) at a specific moment. This "picture" or snapshot lets you save everything about the virtual computer's condition - what programs are open, what files are being used, and so on. Later, if something goes wrong or if you want to go back to that exact moment, you can use this snapshot to return the virtual computer to the way it was.
When you take a snapshot in VMware, it creates a .VMSN file. This file works together with another file ending in .VMSD, which keeps track of information about the snapshot, like when it was taken and what changes have been made since then.
To open or use a .VMSN file, you need VMware software, such as VMware Workstation or VMware Fusion. These programs let you run virtual computers on your actual computer. For example, you could be using a Windows computer but also run a virtual Linux computer inside it using VMware.
Here's how you can create a .VMSN file using VMware Fusion, which is a version of VMware for Mac computers: 1. Open VMware Fusion and start your virtual machine. 2. Go to the menu and select "Virtual Machine," then "Snapshots," and finally "Take Snapshot." 3. VMware Fusion will then create the .VMSN file and save it in a specific place on your Mac, usually in the "Virtual Machines" folder inside your "Users" folder.
This snapshot feature is very useful. For instance, if you've just set up a new operating system inside your virtual machine and want to keep it clean, you can take a snapshot. Then, no matter what changes you make afterward, you can always go back to that fresh, clean state by using the snapshot.
