What is a .VRB file?
A .VRB file is a type of backup file used by Veeam Software, which specializes in creating backup and recovery solutions for virtual machines (VMs). These files are important for people who manage VMs because they help save and protect data without using too much storage space.
When Veeam Software makes a backup of a VM, the first backup is a complete copy of everything and is saved in a file with a .VBK extension. After this full backup, Veeam doesn't keep making complete copies. Instead, it creates what's called an incremental backup, which only saves the changes that happened since the last backup. These incremental backups are saved in .VRB files. If there are many changes over time, you might have several .VRB files, each one representing the changes from one backup to the next.
To open a .VRB file, you would use Veeam Backup & Replication software. This is the program designed to work with these files, allowing you to manage your backups and restore your VMs if needed.
The reason incremental backups are useful is that they save a lot of disk space. Instead of saving a complete copy of everything every time, which would quickly fill up your hard drive, it only saves what has changed. This makes it much more efficient. However, if you need to restore your VM to a specific point in time, the software will use the original full backup (.VBK file) and all the .VRB files up to the point you want to restore. This way, it rebuilds the VM's state exactly as it was at that time, using much less disk space for storage.
