.VSV File Extension

A .VSV file is a Virtual Machine Saved State File, created by Microsoft.

Open with Microsoft Windows Virtual PC (Discontinued). Available for Windows.

What is a .VSV file?

The .VSV file extension stands for a Virtual Machine Saved State File. This type of file is used by software programs like Windows Virtual PC and Virtual Server, which are designed to create and manage virtual computers. A virtual computer acts like a real computer but runs inside a software environment on your actual computer.

The .VSV file contains all the information about the virtual machine's memory at a specific moment. This includes all the programs that were running and the files that were open at that time. By saving this information, the .VSV file allows users to pause their virtual machine and later restart it exactly from where they left off, just like saving a game and resuming it later.

These files are particularly useful for testing software or settings in different configurations without risking the main system. Users can take a snapshot of the virtual machine's state, make changes, and then revert back to the snapshot if needed.

To use a .VSV file, you don't open it directly like a document or an image file. Instead, it works together with another file called a .VMC file, which is the configuration file for the virtual machine. The .VMC file keeps track of the .VSV files and uses them to restore the virtual machine to a saved state.

It's important to note that the size of a .VSV file is directly related to the amount of memory allocated to the virtual machine. For example, if the virtual machine is set up with 512MB of RAM, the .VSV file will also be 512MB in size.

Although the programs that primarily use .VSV files, such as Microsoft Windows Virtual PC and Microsoft Virtual Server, are discontinued, they might still be used in some environments or available in older systems.
