What is a .XMIND file?

An .XMIND file is a type of document used by the XMind software, which is designed for brainstorming and creating mind maps. This file format helps users organize thoughts, ideas, and information visually in a structured way. The XMind Workbook File can contain several pages or "sheets," each holding a different diagram or chart. These diagrams can be used to capture ideas in brainstorming sessions, create organizational charts, plan work schemes, manage projects with Gantt charts, and more, making it useful for both individual and business purposes.

To open an .XMIND file, you can use the XMind program or Seavus iMindQ, both of which support this file format. These programs are available for various platforms, including Windows, macOS, and iOS. This means you can work on your mind maps on different devices.

Before the .XMIND format was introduced, XMind used the .XMAP file format for saving these types of documents. However, the newer .XMIND format has since replaced the older .XMAP format.

Additionally, .XMIND files are compressed using Zip compression to save space. If you need to view or edit the contents of an .XMIND file without using XMind or iMindQ, you can do so by renaming the file's extension from .xmind to .zip. After renaming, you can decompress the file using a Zip decompression tool like Corel WinZip, 7-Zip, WinRAR, or Apple Archive Utility. Inside, you'll typically find multiple .XML files that store the data and .JPG files for thumbnails. After making any changes, you can compress these files back into a Zip file and rename the extension back to .xmind to continue using it in XMind or iMindQ.
