What is a .ZVI file?

A .ZVI file is a special type of image file known as a Zeiss Vision Image. This format is used to store images that are taken with a Zeiss microscope, which is a type of microscope made by the company Carl Zeiss. These images are very detailed and high quality. They can show colors in a very wide range, supporting up to 3 colors (red, green, blue) each with 16-bit depth, which means they can display a lot of different shades of each color. They can also store black and white images with 16-bit depth, allowing for many shades of gray.

In addition to the picture itself, a .ZVI file contains extra information, or metadata, about how the image was taken. This includes details about the camera used and the settings on the microscope at the time the image was captured. This information can be very useful for scientists and researchers who need to replicate the conditions of the experiment or study the image in detail.

To open a .ZVI file, you would have needed a program called Carl Zeiss AxioVision. However, this program is no longer available because it has been discontinued. This means you can't get new copies of it or updates. But, there is another program that can open .ZVI files called NetScope Viewer. NetScope Viewer is a software tool that lets you view and analyze images saved in the .ZVI format, so you can still work with these files even though AxioVision is not available anymore.
