What is a .AAA file?
A file with the .aaa extension is one that has been encrypted by the CryptoWall ransomware, specifically version 3.0. This type of file is created when the ransomware infects a computer and encrypts the user's files using a very strong encryption method called RSA-2048. This encryption makes it nearly impossible to open or access the contents of the file without the decryption key, which is held by the attackers. Simply renaming the file by removing the .aaa extension will not decrypt or restore the file to its original state.

More Information: CryptoWall version 3.0 is a type of malicious software (malware) used by cybercriminals to encrypt data and demand ransom from victims. It was particularly active around late 2015 and early 2016. The ransomware typically enters a computer through deceptive means such as spam emails containing malicious links or attachments. When an unsuspecting user clicks on these links or downloads and opens the attachments, the ransomware is activated on the computer.
Once activated, CryptoWall 3.0 searches for and encrypts various types of files, including documents, images, videos, and backup files with extensions like .JPG, .ODT, .PPTX, .XLSX, .MP4, and .WMV. It then renames these files by appending the .aaa extension (e.g., image.jpg becomes image.jpg.aaa).
Following encryption, the ransomware creates files named HELP_YOUR_FILES.TXT, HELP_YOUR_FILES.PNG, or HELP_YOUR_FILES.HTML in each folder containing encrypted files. These files contain messages from the attackers explaining that the files have been encrypted and providing instructions on how to pay a ransom to potentially receive a decryption key.
Victims are strongly advised against paying the ransom as it does not guarantee file recovery and encourages criminal activity. Instead, affected users should seek assistance from cybersecurity professionals and consider reporting the incident to relevant authorities.
