What is a .AMR file?

An AMR file is a type of audio file that is made to be small in size but still keep the sound of someone talking clear and easy to understand. This kind of file was created by a company named Ericsson. It's really good for saving recordings of people speaking, like voice memos or messages you send through your phone. A lot of phones that work with 3G networks use this format to save voice messages.

To listen to an AMR file, you can use different programs on your computer or phone. Some of these programs include the VideoLAN VLC media player, which is free and works on many types of computers and phones, and Apple QuickTime Player, which is often already on Apple devices. Other programs that can open AMR files are Audacity, which lets you edit audio; FFmpeg, which is good for converting files; and Microsoft Media Player, which comes with Windows.

AMR files are special because they use a smart way to make spoken words take up less space without losing too much quality. This is done using something called the Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction (ACELP) method. There are two kinds of AMR files: AMR-NB, which is for narrower sounds, and AMR-WB, which is for wider sounds and makes the audio sound better.

In simple terms, if you have an AMR file, you can listen to it on many common media players or use specific apps on your smartphone, whether it's an iPhone or an Android. This makes it easy to share and listen to voice recordings no matter what device you have.
