What is a .ATTR file?
The .ATTR file extension is associated with a type of file known as an iPhoto Attributes File. This file is specifically created by Apple's iPhoto software, which is a program designed for editing and organizing images. The .ATTR file contains important data related to an image, particularly when attributes of the image, such as color settings or tags, have been modified using iPhoto.
These .ATTR files are typically generated to accompany the main image files whose attributes have been edited. They store the changes made so that the image can be viewed with its updated attributes within the iPhoto program. It's important to note that these files are found in specific subfolders within the iPhoto application directory.
The primary program that was used to open and manage .ATTR files was Apple iPhoto 9.6, which was included with certain versions of the macOS operating system. However, it's crucial to understand that .ATTR files were only used by versions of iPhoto up to iPhoto 2. They are not compatible with iPhoto 4 and later versions.
As of 2015, Apple discontinued iPhoto and replaced it with a new program called Photos. Therefore, newer systems do not use or support .ATTR files, and users with these systems will not be able to open .ATTR files using the Photos app.
For users who still have access to older versions of macOS that include iPhoto, particularly version 9.6 or earlier, .ATTR files can still be accessed and managed within the iPhoto program. However, for those on newer systems or using the Photos app, alternative methods or programs would be needed to access the data in .ATTR files, if at all possible.
