What is a .BAK2 file?
A .BAK2 file is a type of backup file. This means it's a copy of another file, made to keep the original file safe. Different programs can create .BAK2 files, including video games like Crytek Crysis. These files might contain copies of things like maps or scenes from the game. They are similar to files that end in .BAK.
You can open a .BAK2 file with certain programs. For example, games like Crytek Crysis and Crytek Crysis Warhead can use these files. Also, software called E-on Vue, which is used for creating 3D environments, can work with .BAK2 files.
The reason why there's a "2" in .BAK2 might be to show it's the second backup version of a file. So, if you have multiple backups, you can tell them apart by the number at the end.
In some cases, like with the game Crysis, a .BAK2 file is used to backup another backup file (.BAK) that itself is a backup of a .CRY file, which is a map level file for the game. If the original .CRY file gets damaged or corrupted, you can fix the problem by changing the name of the .BAK2 file to end in .CRY instead. This way, you replace the damaged file with the backup copy.
