What is a .CODERCRYPT file?
A file with the .CODERCRYPT extension is a type of encrypted file created by a specific ransomware known as CoderWare, which targets Android devices. This ransomware is a type of malicious software, or malware, that is illegally distributed by cybercriminals. The files affected by this ransomware could originally be any common type of file, such as documents, images, or videos. Once infected by the ransomware, these files are encrypted, meaning their contents are locked and cannot be accessed without a decryption key. The ransomware then renames these files by adding the .CODERCRYPT extension to the end of their original filenames.
For example, if you had a file named "photo.jpg," after the ransomware attack, it would be renamed to "photo.jpg.CODERCRYPT." The purpose of this attack is to force victims to pay a ransom to get the decryption key and regain access to their files.
Unfortunately, there are no legitimate programs designed to open .CODERCRYPT files because they are associated with a ransomware attack. The only way to potentially restore the files is by removing the ransomware and then using decryption tools, if available, or restoring files from a backup.
The CoderWare ransomware was notably spread through a deceptive scheme in December 2020. Cybercriminals created a fake website that mimicked the appearance of the Google Play Store and offered a bogus beta version of the popular video game Cyberpunk 2077 for Android. The website was named "cyberpunk2077mobiledotcom" and promoted an app called Cyberpunk 2077 Mobile (BETA). Unsuspecting users downloaded and installed this fake app, which then requested permissions to access their files. Once these permissions were granted, the ransomware activated, encrypting the files on the device.
The encryption method used by the CoderWare ransomware is known as RC4. After encrypting the files, the ransomware leaves a README.txt file with a message that explains the situation and typically demands payment in exchange for decryption.
It is important to note that paying the ransom does not guarantee that you will regain access to your files, and it also encourages the criminals to continue their illegal activities. It is recommended to seek professional help in dealing with ransomware infections and to always keep regular backups of important data to prevent loss in such situations.
