What is a .DEVOS file?

A file that ends in .devos is a type of file that has been taken over and locked by something called Devos ransomware. This means that the original file, which could have been anything like a letter, a picture, a movie, or any other kind of file, has been changed so that you can't open it like you normally would. The name of the file is also changed to include .devos at the end, and it often has some extra information added to it, like a special user ID and an email address. This email address belongs to the people who control the ransomware, and they expect you to email them if you want to get your files back.

To try and fix files that have been changed by Devos ransomware, you might use something called System Restore on your computer. This is a tool that can help you go back in time on your computer to a point before the ransomware attacked your files.

Devos ransomware works by sneaking into your computer and making it impossible for you to access your own files. It does this by scrambling the files and then asking you to pay money to unscramble them. It leaves behind notes, usually named info.hta and info.txt, telling you what happened and how you can pay to get your files back. While older versions of this ransomware put a user ID and an email address right in the name of each locked file, some of the newer versions don't do this anymore.

You might be wondering how this ransomware got onto your computer in the first place. It's usually hidden inside email attachments that look safe but aren't, or in software that you thought was okay to download but actually contained harmful programs. If you've recently opened an email attachment from someone you don't know or downloaded something from a website you're not familiar with, that might be how the ransomware got in.
