What is a .DIM file?
The .DIM file extension refers to a DIME File, which is a type of raw disk image backup. This file is created using Active@ Disk Image, a software program designed for Windows that helps with backing up and recovering data. A .DIM file contains a complete copy of all the data on a hard disk or a partition. This includes not just the files and folders but also the configuration data that explains how the disk or partition is structured, such as its geometry.
When you use Active@ Disk Image to create a raw disk image, you are essentially making an exact clone of every single sector on the selected disk or partition. This clone includes both the spaces that are being used and those that are not. The primary use of a .DIM file is for data recovery purposes or for backing up operating systems that are not Windows.
To create a .DIM file, you would go to the menu bar in Active@ Disk Image, select "Disk Operations" or "Tools," and then choose "Create Raw Image." When you do this, two files are generated. The first is the .DIM file, which contains a description of the disk image. The second is a data file that actually holds the copied data. This data file is named after the disk image and ends with ".dim.001." If the disk image is large and requires more than one data file, additional files are created with extensions like ".dim.002," and so on.
The programs that can open a .DIM file include Active@ Data Recovery and Active@ Disk Image. These tools allow you to manage and use the data stored in .DIM files for recovery or backup purposes.
