What is a .DIX file?
The .DIX file extension is used for a type of file known as a DIVA-GIS Export File. This file is created by a program called DIVA-GIS, which is used for analyzing geographic data. When you work on a project in DIVA-GIS, you might use various layers of information, like maps or data points, which are all part of your project. A project file in DIVA-GIS is saved with a .DIV extension.
When you want to share your project with someone else or move it to another computer, you can export the entire project, including all its layers, into a single file. This exported file is what is called a .DIX file. It's like packing up all the parts of your project into one box that can be easily moved. This .DIX file is also compressed, which means it's made smaller so it's easier to send to someone else via email.
To create a .DIX file, you use the "Export Project" command found in the DIVA-GIS program. If you receive a .DIX file or need to open it again in DIVA-GIS, you use the "Import Project" command. This tells DIVA-GIS to unpack the .DIX file and load your project with all its layers just like you had it before.
The main program you need to open a .DIX file is DIVA-GIS itself. Since the .DIX file is specifically designed for use with this program, other software won't be able to open or use the file correctly. DIVA-GIS is designed to work with these files for the purpose of analyzing and working with geographic data in a project format.
