What is a .DSN file?
A .DSN file is a type of file known as a Database Source Name File, but it is also commonly used in electronics as a PCB (printed circuit board) design file. It is primarily created by a software called OrCAD, which is a tool specifically used for designing printed circuit boards. The .DSN file contains the circuit schematic, which is a detailed diagram showing how all the electronic components are connected in the PCB design. These components are represented by "symbols," and these symbols are stored in another type of file with the .OLB extension.
The .DSN file is usually part of a larger project that may include several other files, typically grouped under a project file with the .OPJ extension in OrCAD. This means that the .DSN file works together with other files to form the complete PCB design project.
To open a .DSN file, the most straightforward program to use is Cadence OrCAD PCB Designer, because this software is specifically designed to create and manage these files. However, if you do not have access to OrCAD, you can also use another program called Altium Designer. Altium Designer can import .DSN files through its Import Wizard, allowing you to view and edit the PCB design schematics within Altium Designer. This flexibility can be very useful if you are working in an environment where different software tools are used.
