What is a .ENQ file?
An .ENQ file is a special kind of file that is used by a program called EndNote. EndNote is a tool that helps people organize and keep track of their references for research papers or projects. This .ENQ file contains settings or rules for searching citations or references. For example, it can have rules to find articles by a specific author, articles published in a certain journal, or articles from a certain time period. This is really helpful when you have a complex search and you don't want to enter the search criteria every time you look for references.
You can share these .ENQ files with other people who use EndNote, which means they can use the same search options without having to set them up themselves. This can save a lot of time, especially if you're working on a project with others.
To make an .ENQ file in EndNote, you would start a search, set up all your search options the way you want them, and then save these options as an .ENQ file. There's a button in EndNote called "Online Search..." that you click to start this process. After you've set your search options, you click on the "Options" button and then choose "Save Search" to save these settings into an .ENQ file.
If you already have an .ENQ file and you want to use the search options it contains, you can either double-click on the file or, within EndNote, choose the option to "Load Search" and then select your .ENQ file. This will apply all the search settings saved in the file to your current search.
The main program that opens .ENQ files is Clarivate EndNote. It's important to note that EndNote was once developed by a company called Thomson Reuters, but it's now managed by Clarivate.
