What is a .ESL file?

An ESL file is a type of game file used in some video games made by Bethesda Softworks, like Fallout 4, Skyrim Special Edition (SE), and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR. This file is like a small package that changes something in the game. For example, it can change how something looks or how weapons or armor work. People make these changes, called "mods," to add new things to the game or change parts they don't like. You can get these mods from a place called the Creation Club, which is like an online store for game modifications.

To use an ESL file, you need to have the game it's made for, like Skyrim or Fallout 4. You can open these files with the game itself or with special tools made by Bethesda Softworks, like the Creation Kit. Another tool called xEdit can also work with ESL files.

ESL files are part of a bigger family of game files that include ESM (Elder Scrolls Master File) and ESP (Elder Scrolls Plugin File). ESM files are the big, main files that have all the game's basic information. ESP files are like ESM files but are used to change or add to what's in the ESM files. ESL files are a newer, lighter type that doesn't take up much space. They were introduced to help with a problem where you could only have 255 of these mod files in your game. ESL files let you have more mods without hitting this limit because they are smaller and hold less information—up to 4096 records, which are pieces of data like item descriptions or world details.

In simple terms, ESL files let you customize your game in small ways without overloading it with too much extra information. If you're into making your gaming experience more personal or just want to try out new things within your favorite Bethesda games, ESL files and the mods they contain can be a fun way to do that.
