What is a .EXML file?

An EXML file is a special type of file used by people who like to change how the video game No Man's Sky works. No Man's Sky is a game where you explore space and try to survive. The "EXML" in EXML file stands for "XML," which is a way to store information in a file that both computers and humans can understand. People who make changes to the game, called modders, use EXML files to adjust different parts of the game, like how it plays or what things look like.

To make these changes, modders use a tool called NMS Modding Station. This tool helps them change files from the game into a format they can edit. You can open and change EXML files with simple programs that let you edit text, like Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on Apple computers, or even Microsoft Visual Studio Code if you want something more advanced. These programs are easy to find and often already on your computer.

No Man's Sky keeps its game information in files called .PAK. Modders have figured out how to open these PAK files and change them. They use NMS Modding Station to turn files from the game, known as .MBIN files, into EXML files. MBIN files are like a secret code for the game's settings, but once they are turned into EXML files, they are much easier to change. This could be anything from how the game looks, to how items in the game work.

After a modder has finished changing an EXML file, they use NMS Modding Station again to turn it back into a PAK file. This way, the game can understand and use the changes they made. This process lets players customize their No Man's Sky experience in many different ways.
