.EX_ File Extension

A .EX_ file is a Compressed Executable File, created by Microsoft.

Open with Microsoft Windows. Available for Windows.

What is a .EX_ file?

An .EX_ file is a type of file that is really a program for Windows computers, but it's been squished down to take up less space and its name has been changed a little bit. Normally, programs on Windows have ".exe" at the end of their name, but this one has ".ex_" instead. You might see these .EX_ files when you're setting up new software from a CD. They're used this way to stop them from starting up by accident before they're supposed to.

To use one of these .EX_ files, you need a computer that runs Windows. If you ever find an .EX_ file and you need it to work like a regular program, you just have to change its name back to end with ".exe" instead of ".ex_". This is like telling your computer, "Hey, this is a program, you can run it now." After you change the name, you can just double-click on it, and it should start up just like any other program you use on your computer.

This trick of changing the name is also a smart way to keep programs from starting up when you don't want them to. Since the computer doesn't recognize the .EX_ ending as something it can run, double-clicking the file by mistake won't do anything. This can help avoid some problems or mistakes.
