What is a .FB! file?
The ".FB!" file extension is linked to a type of temporary file known as a FlashGet Incomplete Download File. This kind of file is created by FlashGet, which is a program designed to manage downloads on Windows computers. When you use FlashGet to download a file, it might not finish downloading all at once. During this process, FlashGet saves a part of the file that it has managed to download so far as a temporary file with the ".FB!" extension. This helps the program keep track of the download progress. If the download gets interrupted, FlashGet can use this temporary file to continue downloading from where it left off, instead of starting over.
To open a file with the ".FB!" extension, you would typically use the FlashGet program itself. This is because the ".FB!" file is specifically designed to work with FlashGet and is managed by the software.
Here's a bit more detail on how it works: When FlashGet starts downloading a file, say a video file with the extension ".AVI", it adds ".FB!" to the end of the file name, making it ".avi.fb!". This signals that the download is not yet complete. Once the download finishes, FlashGet removes the ".FB!" part, returning the file to its original ".AVI" extension, indicating that the download is complete and the file is ready to use.
This method of marking incomplete downloads is not unique to FlashGet. Other download managers like BitTorrent and BitComet use similar systems, with their own unique extensions for incomplete files.
It's worth noting that in some cases, you might be able to peek into the contents of an incomplete download by manually removing the ".FB!" extension from the file name. However, since the file is incomplete, you might not be able to view or use it properly, as some of the data is still missing.
