A .GADGET file is a Windows Gadget, created by Microsoft.

Open with Microsoft Windows (only Windows 7 and Windows Vista). Available for Windows.

What is a .GADGET file?

A .GADGET file is a type of file that works like a mini-program on computers that have Windows Vista or Windows 7 operating systems. Think of it as a tiny application that lives on the side of your computer screen, in a space called the sidebar. These little programs can do a variety of useful or fun things, such as showing you the latest news, helping you search the internet more easily, checking your computer's performance, or even letting you play mini-games.

Inside a .GADGET file, there are several smaller files that work together to make the gadget function. These files are often written in web development languages, which include HTML (the standard language for creating web pages), CSS (used for designing and setting the layout of web pages), and JS (JavaScript, a programming language that adds interactivity to websites). All these files are packed together in a format similar to a Zip file, which is a way of storing files that takes up less space.

Originally, you could only use .GADGET files if you had Windows Vista or Windows 7 because these were the only versions of Windows that had the sidebar feature where these gadgets could live. However, if you really like using gadgets and you have a newer version of Windows, there's still a way to use them. A program called 8GadgetPack was created to allow gadgets to be used on newer versions of Windows, including Windows 8 and Windows 10. This means you can still enjoy the convenience and fun of gadgets even if you've updated your computer.

To open a .GADGET file, you would typically just need to double-click on it if you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, and your computer will automatically know how to handle it. If you're using a newer version of Windows and have 8GadgetPack installed, you would also be able to open and use .GADGET files through that program.
