What is a .GM file?
A .GM file is a type of computer file used with GameMonkey Script. GameMonkey Script is a special computer language designed for adding extra features or rules to video games and some other types of software. It's a bit like writing instructions for the game to follow. The way it's written is similar to how you might write instructions in the C programming language, and it also shares some ideas with another language called Lua.
You can open and edit .GM files with a few different programs. One of them is GameMonkey Script itself, which understands the instructions inside the .GM file. You can also use simple text editing programs like Microsoft Notepad, which comes with Windows, or any other program that lets you edit text. These text editors won't understand the GameMonkey Script instructions, but they let you see and change the text.
It's interesting to note that .GM files are not the same as MIDI files, which are used for music in some games. For example, OpenTTD, a game based on Transport Tycoon, uses ".mid" files for its music, not ".gm" files. However, the older game Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which OpenTTD is based on, does use .GM files in its Windows version.
