What is a .HAN file?
A .HAN file is a special type of file that is used by Amazon Kindle devices, like the Kindle e-reader and the Kindle Fire tablet. This file helps keep track of your reading in eBooks. It saves things like the notes you make, where you place bookmarks, and how far you've read in a book. Before, Kindle devices used a different kind of file called .MBP for this purpose, but they started using .HAN files after an update to the devices' software (firmware 3.4).
Even though .HAN files are very important for Kindle devices, they are not meant to be opened and looked at by people using the devices. These files work in the background, allowing you to pick up reading right where you left off, and keeping all your bookmarks and notes in place. The actual eBook, the book you read, is usually in a file that ends in .AZW3, not .HAN.

When you open a .HAN file in a text editor, you might see a lot of code or text that doesn't make much sense, but it contains all the data about your reading progress and interactions with the eBook.
